What is a Keyword?

Keywords are terms or phrases that people enter into search engines like Google, Bing, or Yahoo while looking for information, goods, services, or content. Keywords are extremely important in the context of digital marketing and content development because they help your material show up in search engine results pages (SERPs) when people type pertinent queries.

Types of Keywords:

  1. Primary Keywords: The principal and most significant keywords that effectively capture the central concept or subject of a piece of content, a webpage, or an entire website are primary keywords, sometimes referred to as focus keywords or target keywords. You want your content to appear highly for these keywords in search engine results.
  2. Secondary or LSI Keywords: Secondary keywords are related terms that support and contextualise the principal keyword. They are also known as supporting keywords or LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing) keywords. Because they are more precise, they can aid search engines in deciphering the subtleties of your material.
  3. Short Keywords:These are one- or two-word, brief, generic, and wide keywords. Although they are fiercely competitive, they have a huge search volume. Consider the words "shoes" or "travel."
  4. Long-tail Keywords: Long-tail keywords are more detailed phrases that are typically three to five words long. Although they receive fewer searches, they frequently reveal a more precise search intent.
  5. Exact Match Keywords: Exact match keywords are particular words or phrases that precisely match a search query entered by a user. This indicates that the keyword and the search term are same.
  6. Broad Match Keywords: Compared to exact match keywords, broad match keywords offer more flexibility. They make it possible for your content to show up in search results for related, alternative, and related terms.
  7. Negative Keywords: Negative keywords are words you choose to exclude from searches that are relevant to your content.

Step 1: Make a List of your Core Topics

Make a list of broad, pertinent themes that are connected to your business, industry, or niche to start. You are using these as "seed keywords." Consider what your target audience could look for by placing yourself in their shoes. Utilise your expertise in the field and take into account the goods, services, or knowledge you provide. Prepare a list of around 20-30 keywords.

Step 2: Find a Keyword Research tool

Finding a wide variety of relevant keywords and gaining insight into their search volume, level of competition, and potential are made possible by the use of keyword research tools. Ubersuggest, SEMrush, Ahrefs, and Google Keyword Planner are a few examples of tools that can offer insights on keyword metrics and variations. If you are budget friendly and do not want to spend on doing keyword research, please go ahead with Google Keyword Planner. It provides all the data related to a single keyword and also provides some keyword ideas.

Step 3: Conduct Keyword Research

  • Login to your keyword planner tool
  • Enter one of your core topic and search
  • You will find all the relevent keywords related to your topic
  • Check important metrics like competition, search volume etc. and select a few suitable keywords.
  • Copy those keywords and then paste them in an excel sheet
  • The process is not over, paste your core topic in Google Search bar and press enter
  • Now, scroll down on the first page of Google
  • You will find a list of relevent keywords
Bottom of the Search engine results page of google showing suggested search keywords.

  • Include them in your list as well

Note: You can follow the last 4 steps for every keyword that you put in your list.

Step 4: Find Secondary or LSI Keywords

Finding secondary keywords is quite easy. You just have to understand the content of your website. For example, if your topic is"5 Best Keyword Research tool", then your subtopics could be, Google keyword planner, Semrush, Wordtracker etc. and these are also your secondary keywords. LSI Keywords are always selected for one particular article/content only. Hence, you have to create a list of 3-4 secondary keywords for each of your primary Keyword.

Step 5: Putting Keywords in your Content

While Putting keywords, you need to follow the points:

  • Select only one Primary Long-Tail Keyword for your content.
  • You may select 2-3 short primary keywords but make sure you include them in the Primary Long-tail keyword
  • You can have 3-4 secondary or LSI keywords in your content
  • All the keywords should be used atleast 5-8 times in the content
  • Use the primary long-tail keyword as the H1 for the post/content
  • Use LSI keywords in the H2,H3,H4 sections
